My novel, The Founders’ Plot, is playing out in real life. Not exactly, but close enough. Its basic storyline has a newly elected governor pushing through a stringent immigration law that’s declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. But the decorated Afghan War veteran ignores the ruling and continues to enforce the law, creating a clash between federal, state, and judicial power.
Now, look what’s happening in Texas. Governor Greg Abbott has taken a tough stand on immigration by floating buoys on the Rio Grande River, installing razor wire along the border and using National Guard troops to stop illegal aliens from entering the United States. The Biden administration is fighting these actions and appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which declared that the federal government has the constitutional right to remove the buoys and razor wire.
Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick scoffed at this, saying, “Sure, they can remove the buoys and razor wire, but we’ll just put them back up.”
Meanwhile Governor Abbott has announced he will establish a forward operating base for National Guard troops at Eagle Pass. And 25 governors have stood by Abbott and stated they will send their National Guard troops to Texas. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has promised to send a full battalion.
Are we headed for another Civil War? I seriously doubt it. But this border crisis has been festering for a long time. When I published my first version of The Founders’ Plot, it had already reached the boiling point. I remember Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, meeting then President Barack Obama at the airport and wagging her figure at him calling for rigorous immigration legislation. It didn’t happen. Former president Donald Trump stifled illegal immigration, but as soon and President Joe Biden took office, he undid Trump’s policies and today we have the largest influx of illegals in our country’s history.
Thousands upon thousands of illegals have poured across our border. Many of them are MS 13 gang and drug cartel members who are involved in human trafficking, smuggling drugs like fentanyl and increased crime. And these illegals aren’t just from Mexico. They are coming from numerous South American countries as well as the Middle East and Africa. Several thousand Chinese are also among them.
This has become a national security problem. A major one that consistently is placed in the top three things to be dealt with, no matter what party is in office. Most of the Chinese who cross our border are of military age. If war ever broke out with China, they could present a dangerous fifth column of spies and saboteurs.
Something has to be done and done soon. Not tomorrow. Now!
